A Chord A Week,

Notes in C Major: C – E (Major Third) – G (Perfect Fifth)

Thinking of the 1st chord to start off the blog, the C Major chord was the first one that hit me in the head and it was the most appropriate for the task. Easy, basic and useful.

There are more than thousands of song containing this simple yet majestic mixture of 3 notes, C – E – G. The C major key is the most simple key because it contains all the natural notes. The feeling induced by this chord when used as a first chord is unique. Major chords are known to have a happy feeling connected to them as the intervals of their notes spell out a clear happy mood. This mood connected to the hopeful sound of the C note makes C chord one of the most used chords out there.

It sets a mood of the song to be one filled with hope and a good feeling vibe that can be seen in many popular music like on the start of the verse in Wish you were here, by Pink Floyd, the mood is set up for a hopeful mood, which is the theme of the song.

Another example of this which I like is the cover of the song Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. The C chord in the song’s verse makes the song to be filled with a sense of hope and security.

With a feeling this intense built into it the C chord is a force to be reckoned with, just stop starting all of your songs with it.
